Mureș County (Romanian pronunciation:, Romanian: Județul Mures, Hungarian: Maros megye) is a county of Romania, in the historical region of Transylvania, with the administrative centre in Târgu Mureș.
The Târgu Mureș metropolitan area is a metropolitan area in Târgu Mureș, Romania.It was founded in 2005. It has a population of 209,532 as of the 2011 census. It is Romania's only metropolitan area where Hungarians form the largest ethnic group, with 98,593 people.

Sântana de Mureș was part of the Székely Land region of Transylvania.Until 1918, the village belonged to the Maros-Torda County of the Kingdom of Hungary.In the immediate aftermath of World War I, following the declaration of the Union of Transylvania with Romania, the area passed under Romanian administration during the Hungarian–Romanian War of 1918–1919.
The commune is located in the center of the department, on the left side of the Mureș river, on the Plateau of Transylvania (Podișul Transilvanei), 5 km south-west of Târgu Mureș, the capital of the county, of which it is a suburb.
