In the United States, the history of the Episcopal Church has its origins in the Church of England, a church which stresses its continuity with the ancient Western church and claims to maintain apostolic succession. [1] Its close links to the Crown led to its reorganization on an independent basis in the 1780s.
The Episcopal Church (TEC), also officially the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America (PECUSA), [6] is a member church of the worldwide Anglican Communion based in the United States with additional dioceses elsewhere. It is a mainline Protestant denomination and is divided into nine provinces.
They are represented by the nine white crosses arranged in a St. Andrew's Cross on a blue field on the Church arms and flag. The rest of the flag is a red St. George’s Cross on a white field reminiscent of the former national flag of the old Kingdom of England before the first Act of Union in 1706/1707 uniting England and Scotland .
This is a list of the Presiding Bishops of the Episcopal Church in the United States. Initially the position of Presiding Bishop rotated geographically. After 1795 the Presiding Bishop was the senior bishop in order of consecration.
The number references the sequence of consecration. Two capital letters before their number identify bishops consecrated for missionary work outside of the United States. "Diocese" refers to the diocese for which the individual was ordained. Note, this does not mean it was the only diocese that bishop presided over.

The Episcopal Church (TEC) is governed by a General Convention and consists of 96 dioceses in the United States proper, plus ten dioceses in other countries or outlying U.S. territories, the diocese of Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, and a diocese for Armed Services and Federal Ministries, for a total of 108 dioceses.
