Hume Lake Christian Camps began as Fellowship Conferences, and was founded by Walter Warkentin and partners in 1945 in Dinuba, California. Walt Warkentin, Dave Hofer, Hermon Pettit and John Strain formed a number of Christian organizations, including Fellowship Conferences, after meeting to pray about their relationship with God.
Hume Lake Christian Camps is the largest facility at the lake, which traces its origins to 1946, when the founders met in the nearby valley town of Dinuba to discuss plans for a Christian Bible camp. The Hume Lake Subdivision was built to finance the development of Hume Lake Christian Camps. John Strain conducted the original surveys for the subdivision and Don French built the roads and water systems. 247 lots were subdivided on 99 year leases. [3] A post office operated at Hume from 1908 to 1924, and from 1938 to the present. [2]
The sale included the Hume Lake Hotel, store, service station, post office, 22 cottages, 22 boats, a saloon and a brothel. The land was converted into Hume Lake Christian Camps and serves as a summer camp and conference center for worship and religious studies. [37] [38]
