Weather proved to be a challenge for the FRD-10 antennas. For example, the antenna at NSGA Winter Harbor had problems due to frost heaving the ground and shifting the reflector screens out of alignment. Digging up the affected poles and replacing them was costly and was estimated at $240,000 in the late 1970s.
The present station name, Naval Security Group Activity, Winter Harbor, became official on 9 June 1958. In 2001, the base transitioned from an operational posture to focusing on the closure process, with the ultimate goal of transferring the Schoodic parcel to the National Park Service .
The current Cutler Naval Station was built during 1960 and became operational on January 4, 1961. It has a transmission power of 2 megawatts. As with all VLF stations, the transmitter has a very small bandwidth, and so cannot transmit audio (speech) but only coded text messages, at a relatively low data rate.
An initial prototype antenna array used 40 vertically aligned half rhombic antennas in a 400 foot diameter circle. A second prototype used 40 sleeve monopoles in a 434-foot circle. It was completed in October 1957, and was used to direction find Sputnik 1. These were augmented by a reflecting screen in June 1958. [6]
An antenna array (or array antenna) is a set of multiple connected antennas which work together as a single antenna, to transmit or receive radio waves. [ 1 ] : p.149 [ 2 ] The individual antennas (called elements ) are usually connected to a single receiver or transmitter by feedlines that feed the power to the elements in a specific phase ...
Woman was last seen on Dec. 17. "Known acquaintance" has been charged with murder after body parts were found in his car.
The array is centered on a ground screen 1,443 feet (439.8 m) in diameter. The arrangement permits accurate direction finding of signals from up to 4000 nautical miles (7408 km) away.
