Ross Carpenter is a Hawaii-based fishing guide and sailor who enjoys boating and sailing out on the sea. When he finds out his boss is retiring to Arizona, he seeks to find a way to buy the Westwind, a boat that he built with his father. Ross is caught in a love triangle with two women: childish, insensitive club singer Robin, and sweet Laurel.
James Ross Carpenter was born in Monmouth, Illinois, to George Daniel Carpenter and Margery Ann Pollock on August 7, 1867. He was educated in public schools in Illinois and Kansas and graduated from Monmouth College and the National Normal University. On September 15, 1887, he married Fanny May Russell and later had three children with her.

Although the Young Canadians only recorded two independent EPs and a single before breaking up, their song "Hawaii" (co-written with Ross Carpenter) is one of the classic Canadian punk anthems. Although long out of print, the EPs, along with some unreleased live material, were reissued in 1995 as the album No Escape .
