The city of Düsseldorf is a member of the German North Rhine-Westphalia District, Municipality and City Friends of Pedestrians and Cyclists Working Group, who bestowed upon Düsseldorf the title of "Friend of Cyclists City" in 2007, although the city still has a few gaps in the network of cycle paths in the eyes of many of its citizens.

The Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region (German: Metropolregion Rhein-Ruhr) is the largest metropolitan region in Germany, with over ten million inhabitants. [2] A polycentric conurbation with several major urban concentrations, the region covers an area of 7,110 square kilometres (2,750 sq mi), entirely within the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The City of Düsseldorf consists of 50 city parts , which are collected into 10 boroughs (Stadtbezirke). [1] [2] Every district has its own local assembly (local parliament Bezirksvertretung) and its own borough mayor (Bezirksbürgermeister). The Bezirksvertretungen have only advisory roles, they do not have their own budgets.
Borough 3 (German: Stadtbezirk 3) is a central borough of Düsseldorf, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany and the city's most populous and one of its most diverse boroughs. Stadtbezirk 3 covers an area of 24.71 square kilometres and (as of December 2020) has about 121,000 inhabitants. [ 1 ]
Stadtbezirk 5 borders with the Düsseldorf boroughs 1 and 6 to the South, and - via a shared border across the Rhine - borough 4 to the South-West. To the West - also across the Rhine - it borders with Rhein-Kreis Neuss. Further it shares borders with the city of Duisburg to the North, and Kreis Mettmann to the East.
Borough 2 is the smallest of all boroughs in Düsseldorf and next to the central city borough 1, it is the only of Düsseldorf's boroughs to not touch the city limits. Starting clockwise from North-west to South-west, Borough 2 borders with the following Düsseldorf boroughs: 1 , 6 , 7 , 8 and 3 .
Borough 9 (German: Stadtbezirk 9) is a southern borough of Düsseldorf, the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The borough covers an area of 36.57 square kilometres and (as of December 2020) has approximately 94,000 inhabitants, making it the city's second most populous borough after Borough 3. [1]
