Half Price Books, Records, Magazines, Incorporated is a chain of new and used bookstores in the United States. The company's original motto is "We buy and sell anything printed or recorded except yesterday's newspaper", and many of the used books, music, and movies for sale in each location are purchased from local residents.
The set was originally published in 1922 in 8 volumes as Compton's Pictured Encyclopedia by F. E. Compton and Company of Chicago. It was titled "Pictured" because no other encyclopedia at the time had as large or as diverse a collection of illustrations. [2] The encyclopedia was expanded to 10 volumes in 1924 and 15 in 1932.

The peak year for the printed encyclopaedia was 1990, when 120,000 sets were sold, but sales had dropped to 40,000 per annum by 1996. [22] There were 12,000 sets of the 2010 edition printed, of which 8,000 had been sold by March 2012. [23] By late April 2012, the remaining copies of the 2010 edition had sold out at Britannica's online store.
