Golden Valley High School was founded in 2003 and opened on August 18, 2003. Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, the 28th Chief Justice of California, visited Golden Valley High School on May 17, 2013 to present Golden Valley High School with the "Civic Learning Award of Excellence."
Golden Valley's Advanced Placement program has earned the praise of Newsweek magazine, which named it a "Top 1300" school in the United States, three years running. [4] Golden Valley has also garnered a Silver Award from U.S. News & World Report, which named it one of the top 1,800 schools in the United States. [5]
Golden Valley started its athletics program when the school first opened in 2004. In 2011 the boys' cross country team succeeded in achieving their first state championship in CIF Division II. They also placed 11th at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon .
The GVHS Environmental Club is one of the school's many non-athletic student clubs. It has the stated goal of "provid[ing] students with opportunities to spend time outdoors while helping better the Garnet Valley community." [7] The club has several projects which its members contribute to, including a nature trail and a compost bin.
The GVHS dance department contains around 300 students, and supports two dance teams. The Gator Dance Co. is a 15 to 20 member team that performs at school events; The Gator Dance Elite is an 11 to 15 member team that participates in the same school events, and also performs at the CCSD Dance Festival, and travels to dance competitions.
