Abbeville was founded in 1857 as seat of the newly formed Wilcox County. The town was incorporated in 1883. [ 6 ] According to one tradition, the city was named after Abbie McNally, the wife of the original owner of the site, while another tradition states the name is a transfer from Abbeville, South Carolina . [ 7 ]
The Wilcox County School District holds pre-school to grade twelve, and consists of an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school. [12] The district has 90 full-time teachers and over 1,439 students. The Wilcox County Courthouse in Abbeville, Georgia was built in 1903. It was designed by architect Frank P. Milburn, who also designed several other Georgia courthouses. Its facade features cream-colored brick and stone trim. It has two Ionic tetrastyle porches.
