Springfield Township has had a long-standing commitment to zoning and planning dating back to the early 1950s. The Township Board adopted an interim zoning ordinance in early 1952, which contained five zoning districts. In 1965 an ordinance which contained 13 different zoning districts was adopted.

Aug. 17—SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP — Residents of Springfield Township voiced clear concern over a proposed sand and gravel mining pit and processing plant during a public meeting Wednesday.
Deerfield Township is in the northeast part of Livingston County and is bordered to the north by Genesee County.According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 37.6 square miles (97.5 km 2), of which 36.2 square miles (93.7 km 2) are land and 1.5 square miles (3.8 km 2), or 3.90%, are water.
