Michael Faraday (/ ˈ f ær ə d eɪ,-d i /; 22 September 1791 – 25 August 1867) was an English physicist and chemist who contributed to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include the principles underlying electromagnetic induction , diamagnetism and electrolysis .
Merton contrasted a "multiple" with a "singleton"—a discovery that has been made uniquely by a single scientist or group of scientists working together. [5] The distinction may blur as science becomes increasingly collaborative. [6] A distinction is drawn between a discovery and an invention, as discussed for example by Bolesław Prus. [7]
Michael Faraday developed the laws of electrolysis: 1833: Michael Faraday invented the thermistor: 1833: English physicist Samuel Hunter Christie invented the Wheatstone bridge (It is named after Charles Wheatstone who popularized it) 1836: Irish priest (and later scientist) Nicholas Callan invented the transformer in Ireland 1837
The discovery of electromagnetic induction was made almost simultaneously, although independently, by Michael Faraday, who was first to make the discovery in 1831, and Joseph Henry in 1832. [77] [78] Henry's discovery of self-induction and his work on spiral conductors using a copper coil were made public in 1835, just before those of Faraday.
1831 – Michael Faraday began experiments leading to his discovery of the law of electromagnetic induction, though the discovery may have been anticipated by the work of Francesco Zantedeschi. His breakthrough came when he wrapped two insulated coils of wire around a massive iron ring, bolted to a chair, and found that upon passing a current ...
1820: Michael Faraday and James Stoddart discover alloying iron with chromium produces a stainless steel resistant to oxidising elements . 1821: Thomas Johann Seebeck is the first to observe a property of semiconductors. [citation needed] 1824: Carnot: described the Carnot cycle, the idealized heat engine.
Such discoveries are often a multi-step, multi-person process. Multiple discovery sometimes occurs when multiple research groups discover the same phenomenon at about the same time, and scientific priority is often disputed. The listings below include some of the most significant people and ideas by date of publication or experiment.
Michael Faraday developed the concept of lines of force to describe electric and magnetic phenomena. [13] In 1831, he writes [13] By magnetic curves, I mean the lines of magnetic forces, however modified by the juxtaposition of poles, which would be depicted by iron filings; or those to ·which a very small magnetic needle would form a tangent."
