Some of these islands have substantial numbers of homes and cottages, but are generally not populated during the winter months when ice build-up in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River make boat access difficult or impossible.

Cow Island is an island on Rice Lake in Ontario, Canada, just west of the mouth of the Otonabee River. There are approximately 50 privately owned lots of land on the island. In 1982, most of it was donated to the government through the efforts of the Nature Conservancy of Canada and the Ontario Heritage Foundation.
