The Rajapaksa family (Sinhala: රාජපක්ෂ, romanized: Rājapakṣa) is a Sri Lankan family that is prominent in politics.It was one of Sri Lanka's most powerful families during Mahinda Rajapaksa's presidency, [1] when many members of the family occupied senior positions in the Sri Lankan state.
Mahinda Rajapaksa ruled as president from 2005 to 2015, appealing to the nationalist sentiment of the island’s Buddhist-Sinhalese majority. Rajapaksa is revered by that majority for leading Sri Lanka to victory over ethnic Tamil rebels in 2009, ending a 26-year civil war. In 2015, he lost to the opposition led by his former aide.
