Columbus High School opened with a class of 406 boys and 431 girls on August 31, 1959, following a three-year fund-raising effort. The school's primary advocate, Father A.A. McAvoy, began directing fundraising efforts in 1956. By 1959, McAvoy's efforts had yielded nearly two million dollars in pledges.

After Regis left to join the larger Mississippi Valley Conference in 1992, Columbus Catholic in Waterloo replaced them. Don Bosco joined the conference in 1998, as Regis closed its doors in order for Cedar Rapids to open a new, larger Catholic High School made up of the former populations of LaSalle and Regis.
Originally named the Waterloo Kings, [1] the franchise was forced by the NBA's Sacramento Kings to change their name. The Jaguars were owned by Eddie Diaz. [2] The team played home games their first season at three arenas: UNI West Gym, Columbus High School, and Young Arena. All home games for the 2006 season were played at Young Arena.
