Haryana, India has at least 61 functional universities, including eight central university (five Institutes of National Importance (INI), one AIIMS, two general universities and one deemed university), 22 state universities, two public universities, eight deemed universities (four public and four private) and 21 private universities.
It was founded in 1986 by the Government of Haryana in memory of Sir Chhotu Ram (1881–1945). It was then known as the Chhotu Ram State College of Engineering, Murthal until the government of Haryana upgraded it to University on 6 November 2006 through an Act 29 of 2006 of the Legislature of the state of Haryana.
Chaudhary Ranbir Singh University was established as Kurukshetra University Post Graduate Regional Centre in August 2007. The university was established by Government of Haryana vide an ordinance on 4 July 2014.
