Jean Merilyn Simmons OBE (31 January 1929 – 22 January 2010) was a British actress and singer. [1] [2] One of J. Arthur Rank's "well-spoken young starlets," she appeared predominantly in films, beginning with those made in Britain during and after the Second World War, followed mainly by Hollywood films from 1950 onwards.
Watts was born Mary Spenton in London in 1923. She appeared in many British films, including the Joan Littlewood production Sparrows Can't Sing (1963), and as herself in Portrait of Queenie (1964), featuring in scenes set around Poplar, the Isle of Dogs and the Iron Bridge Tavern, Poplar, which she ran in real life and in which she starred in the TV series Stars and Garters (1963).
