Pencil Pleat Curtains are formed by pulling cords attached to "rufflette tape" to gather the fabric into pleats that look like a row of pencils. These curtains are then hung under a pole or attached to a curtain track with plastic hooks fitted in every 4th "pocket" along the rufflette heading.
Drapery header tape is a stiff fabric band sewn along the top edge of a curtain to provide stiffness and stability to the fabric so that it does not sag. [13] To simplify the task of gathering pleats across the panel, the tape can be made with pleat pockets. [14] It can also be used to conceal drapery hooks.
Straight stitch – the basic stitch in hand-sewing and embroidery; Tacking stitch (UK, also baste or pin) – quick, temporary stitching intended to be removed; Tent stitch – diagonal embroidery stitch at a 45-degree angle; Topstitch – used on garment edges such as necklines and hems, helps facings stay in place and gives a crisp edge
Knife pleat. Accordion pleats or knife pleats are a form of tight pleating which allows the garment to expand its shape when moving. Accordion pleating is also used for some dress sleeves, such as pleating the end of the elbow, with the fullness of the pleat gathered closely at the cuff.
Therefore, to keep those pleats looking polished (and flattering), I’ve adopted Foster’s rule of thumb: “If necessary, be okay with ordering a size up for the most flattering fit.”
Gathering seams once involved tedious hand sewing of basting, which was time-consuming, especially with heavy fabric. However, finer gathers could be achieved. Now, a quick and easy way to make a gather is to use a wide zigzag stitch with a sewing machine. Both the upper and lower thread are pulled long and placed in front of the sewing machine.
