In Word 2010 if you type the figure 1 then a forward slash / followed by a figure 2 (no spaces), Word will convert that to the fraction "half", same with 3 / 4 and 1 / 4. For others, ie. one third, go to insert, symbol, more symbols and you will find the less common ones. Hope it helps!
In the Insert > Symbol dialog, for any selected font, make sure the dropdown in the lower right corner says "Unicode (hex)", and then look in the dropdown in the upper right for the subset named "Number Forms". If it's in that list, selecting it will move the cursor to the first character of that subset that's in the font.
Many fonts do contain characters for 1/3, 2/3, 1/8, 3/8, 5/8, and 7/8 in the Number Forms character subset. You can insert these via the Symbol dialog, which also permits you to assign a keyboard shortcut, or you may choose to create formatted AutoCorrect entries to convert 1/3 (and the others) to the built-up fraction characters.
