The lake was created by Kentucky Utilities' damming of the Dix River, a tributary of the Kentucky River, in 1925 to generate hydroelectric power. [2] With a maximum depth of 249 feet (76 m), Herrington Lake is the deepest lake in Kentucky. [3] A short distance below the dam, the Dix River enters the Kentucky River at High Bridge, Kentucky.
Kentucky Lake has a maximum depth of 40.5 metres (133 ft) and area of approximately 35.6 hectares (88 acres). [3] The park intersects the northern end of the lake, covering approximately one-third of its area. Alleyne Lake is larger and shallower, with a surface area of 54.6 hectares (135 acres) and maximum depth of 35.6 metres (117 ft). [4]
Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a United States 171,280-acre national recreation area (69,310 ha) in Kentucky and Tennessee between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. It was designated as a national recreation area in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and developed using funds appropriated during the Johnson administration.
The largest yellow bass ever taken in Kentucky (1 lb., 1 oz.) was caught in the waters of Lake Barkley. [3] In 2019 officials started to aggressively deal with the invasion of Asian carp into Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. The state is using electo-shock fishing and sonic devices and hope to remove 5 million pounds of the species a year [4]
The lake has become a major source of tourism and an economic engine for Southern Kentucky. As of September 2011 Lake Cumberland was approximately 43 feet (13 m) below its normal level due to leakage in the earthen part of the dam, but repairs were completed in 2009 and officials estimated that lake levels would be back to normal by 2014–2015.
