The prison is in Comstock, a hamlet right outside of the village of Fort Ann in Washington County, New York. As of September 3, 2008 it was home to 1,663 inmates. When Great Meadow opened in 1911 it was the fourth prison for adult males constructed in the state of New York. [1] It closed down on November 6, 2024.
Prior to 1996, Washington County was a Republican stronghold, with the only time between 1884 and 1992 that a Republican presidential candidate failed to win the county being 1964 when Barry Goldwater lost every county in New York in his statewide and national landslide loss.

The hamlet is located in the north central part of Town of Salem, at the junction of New York State Route 22 and Washington County routes 30 and 153. It was an incorporated village from 1803 to 2016. Part of the county government was located here, including the jail and the Sheriff's Department.
A third is just south of the town line with Salem, New York. A peddler's wagon belonging to Lorenzo Levi Brown of Hebron is in the wagon collection of the Museum of Long Island at Stony Brook, New York. The town developed as an agricultural community, which it still is today. By 1864, it was the chief potato-producing area of Washington County.
