Heather Rankin was born in Mabou, Nova Scotia, a rural community deeply rooted in its Gaelic tradition. [5] She is the eleventh of twelve children born to Kathleen and Alexander (Buddy) Rankin. [ 6 ] She began singing as a child in the St. Mary's Parish Choir and the Community Children's Gaelic Choir.
The first Rankin Family band formed in the 1970s when siblings Geraldine, Genevieve, David, John Morris, and Raylene Rankin began performing at local weddings and dances in Cape Breton.
