The South African Typographical Union (SATU) is a trade union representing workers in the printing and media industries in South Africa.. The union was founded on 5 January 1898 by six local unions, including the Durban Typographical Society.
The printing is from a stone (lithographic limestone) or a metal plate with a smooth surface. It was invented in 1796 by the German author and actor Alois Senefelder and was initially used mostly for musical scores and maps. [3] [4] Lithography can be used to print text or images onto paper or other suitable material. [5]
Offset printing is a common printing technique in which the inked image is transferred (or "offset") from a plate to a rubber blanket and then to the printing surface. When used in combination with the lithographic process, which is based on the repulsion of oil and water , the offset technique employs a flat ( planographic ) image carrier.
The root words photo, litho, and graphy all have Greek origins, with the meanings 'light', 'stone' and 'writing' respectively. As suggested by the name compounded from them, photolithography is a printing method (originally based on the use of limestone printing plates) in which light plays an essential role.
The original source for lithographic limestone was the Solnhofen Limestone, named after the quarries of Solnhofen where it was first found. This is a late Jurassic deposit, part of a deposit of plattenkalk (a very fine-grained limestone that splits into thin plates, usually micrite) that extends through the Swabian Alb and Franconian Alb in Southern Germany. [5]
Contact lithography, also known as contact printing, is a form of photolithography whereby the image to be printed is obtained by illumination of a photomask in direct contact with a substrate coated with an imaging photoresist layer.
Waterless printing is an offset lithographic printing process that eliminates the use of water or the dampening system used in conventional printing. [1] Unlike traditional printing presses, waterless offset presses do not use a dampening solution to clear the press of ink . [ 2 ]
In immersion lithography, light travels down through a system of lenses and then a pool of water before reaching the photoresist on top of the wafer.. Immersion lithography is a technique used in semiconductor manufacturing to enhance the resolution and accuracy of the lithographic process.
