PetSmart is originally started as Pet Food Warehouse in 1986. The initial two stores opened their doors in 1987 in Phoenix. Jim and Janice Dougherty conceived the idea of a chain of discount pet-food warehouses, and, with the initial financial backing of Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation, incorporated under the name Pacific Coast Distributing in 1986.
In November 2001, the mall was renamed Phoenix Spectrum Mall, [4] and Grossman Company Properties began a $10 million renovation project. The mall changed its focus to discount stores, starting with the demolition of The Broadway and replacement by Walmart (originally built as a discount store, later expanded into a Supercenter) in 1994. As of 2005, it was the third largest specialty pet food retailer in the US. [6] The company began adding franchise locations in the Midwest, expanding into the northeastern and southern states during the late 1990s. [6] As of May 2023, Pet Supplies Plus store locations consisted of over 720 stores in 36 states.
