Groundbreaking services for the Raleigh North Carolina Temple, located in Apex, North Carolina, were held on February 6, 1999. After the temple was completed, about 31,000 people toured the temple during the public open house. LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the temple on December 18, 1999.
O’Kelly, leader of the movement, moved in 1794 to Chatham County, North Carolina, and gathered a congregation which eventually took the name O’Kelly Chapel. In 1797, he began a congregation in Orange County known as the Damascus Christian Church. He also began Martha's Chapel in Apex in 1803.
The North Carolina Mission was organized on July 18, 1973. It was renamed the North Carolina Greensboro Mission on June 20, 1974. On July 1, 1980, the mission split moving the mission office to Charlotte. The North Carolina Charlotte and the North Carolina Raleigh Missions were the result of the split.
