Thousand Island Park is in the northern part of the town of Orleans, at the southwest end of Wellesley Island, one of the largest of the Thousand Islands. It is bordered to the east by Wellesley Island State Park. The community is reached by automobile using County Route 100, which leads northeast 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to Interstate 81 at Exit 51.
Thousand Islands National Park (established 1904), formerly known as the St. Lawrence Islands National Park, is a Canadian National Park located on the 1000 Islands Parkway in the Thousand Islands Region of the Saint Lawrence River. The islands are actually the worn-down tops of ancient mountains.
The Thousand Islands archipelago is at the outlet of Lake Ontario at the head of the Saint Lawrence River.The region is bisected by the Canada–United States border and covers portions of Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties in the U.S. state of New York, in addition to parts of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville and Frontenac County in the Canadian province of Ontario.
The island has two State Parks, a nature center, and three golf courses. Located on its southern tip is Thousand Island Park, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. [2] In addition to Interstate 81, which connects two portions of the Thousand Islands Bridge, Jefferson County Routes 100 and 191 serve the island.
The Thousand Island State Park Commission began purchasing farmland on Wellesley Island in 1951, and opened Wellesley Island State Park in 1954. The park was preceded by two other state parks on Wellesley Island, Dewolf Point and Waterson Point, both of which were established in 1898 as part of the St. Lawrence Reservation. [3]

The Thousand Islands Border Crossing connects the towns of Alexandria Bay, New York and Ivy Lea, Ontario at the Thousand Islands Bridge. It is the westernmost of the three St. Lawrence River crossings, and is very busy, with up to two-hour waits in the summer. [8] The US border station at Alexandria Bay is sometimes called Thousand Islands.
