The college was founded in 1946 in classrooms at the local high school. Its first class of less than 100 students was primarily composed of veterans returning from World War II.

The high school and elementary campus is located on I-880; 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Council Bluffs, and 100 miles (160 km) west from Des Moines.
