October 16 – A twin-engine Cessna 310 carrying U.S. Representative Nick Begich of Alaska and House Majority Leader Hale Boggs of Louisiana disappeared during a flight from Anchorage, Alaska to Juneau, Alaska. An unsuccessful 39-day search was called off on November 24; the aircraft's wreckage and Begich and Boggs' bodies were never found.

The experimental plane — an amateur-built "RV-7, N283S" — was manufactured in 2009 and had 1,709.4 hours of "airframe total time" as of its last inspection, the NTSB report said.
The NTSB investigated the crash and determined that the accident was caused by a structural failure that occurred at the wing-to-fuselage attach point, with the right wing failing just before the left. The investigation disclosed "evidence of fatigue cracks in the right wing's lower surface skin panel, with origins beneath the forward doubler.
The aircraft, which left Raleigh Executive Jetport in Sanford about 12:30 p.m., crashed about 12:45 p.m. due to engine issues, according to a Federal Aviation Administration report earlier this month.
