I've used a mixture of 2 tsp. dish detergent (don't remember brand name), 2 tsp. neem oil, and 1 gallon of water for pest control. I apply it to the foliage using a garden sprayer. The plants don't seem to mind, and it helps keep the bugs away.
There are conflicting stories but most are similar to mine: I've used very diluted Dawn on plants for other reasons and the plant was none the worse for wear (Dawn + water = excellent bug killer, btw - good for paper wasp nests). But none of the things I've read, nor my experiences, are of the "soaking the ground in Dawn" caliber.

I'm not sure how Dawn specifically interacts with holly, but people mix dish soap into water (and other stuff) to spray on vegetables (to get rid of insects, powdery mildew, and such), and it doesn't seem to bother the plants terribly. I wouldn't think it would hurt your plants. It might be better to do it when the sun isn't shining, though.
Mix Dawn and water, 1 teaspoon per quart. Amazing insecticide, and a great spritz on dishes before a wash. Won't kill plants but they might notice. My all-purpose plant soap is 1 gallon water, 4 teaspoons baking soda, 2 teaspoons Dawn, as per the Cornell Formula.
I have skunks digging up my lawn. One solution indicates spray 1C castor oil, mixed with 1C dish detergent in a gallon of water. Would that concentration kill the grass especially since it is mixed with another solution (castor oil) Thanks
