Tetum (Tetun [ˈt̪et̪un̪]; Indonesian: Bahasa Tetun; Portuguese: Tétum) [3] is an Austronesian language spoken on the island of Timor.It is one of the official languages of Timor-Leste and it is also spoken in Belu Regency and Malaka Regency, which form the eastern part of Indonesian West Timor adjoining Timor-Leste.
Tetun Prasa is the official language of East Timor alongside Portuguese. In East Timor alone, over 432,766 people speak Tetum as their first language (2015). Of the different dialects, 361,027 East Timorese stated that Tetun Prasa is their mother tongue, 71,418 mentioned Tetun Terik, and 321 mentioned Nanaek (2015). [1]
Tetun Prasa is the version more widely used, and is now taught in schools. Under Indonesian rule from 1976 to 1999, East Timor's official language was Indonesian ; It, along with English , currently has the status of a 'working language' under the present constitution.
