Part of U.S. 550 offers high-speed access (primarily a 4-lane, divided highway) to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Saguache County was formed December 29, 1866, in the Territory of Colorado when it was extracted from the northern half of Costilla County. A partition from Lake County on February 9, 1872, added the northwest section of the present-day county.
At the time of the property's listing on the National Register in 1984, it was occupied and privately owned by George D. Bowles; its accessibility was limited. The property was noted as one of the best-preserved antebellum-era taverns in central Virginia and perhaps "the most impressive building of its type ever erected in Central Virginia."
