The original fountain was cast in 1934, then later recast in 1977 and 1992. It features a bronze sculpture of a nude boy holding a bird, resting on a granite base. The work was surveyed as part of the Smithsonian Institution 's " Save Outdoor Sculpture! " program in 1993.

After the church was demolished in 1899 it was moved to Temple Row (outside St Philip's Cathedral).
The fountain was installed in 1912 in Central Square, then moved in 1969 to its current location on Worcester Common. In 1970, the statue was stolen, and was re-installed two years later. An attempted theft occurred in 2004. The bronze is officially named Boy with a Turtle but is known to locals as Turtle Boy.
