The Players (often inaccurately called The Players Club) is a private social club founded in New York City by the 19th-century Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth. The club is located in a mansion at 16 Gramercy Park, built in 1847. Booth bought the house in 1888, reserved an upper floor for his residence, and turned the rest into a clubhouse.
Players' first and only land-based casino was the Players Island Resort in Mesquite, Nevada, about an hour away from Las Vegas. This resort featured a spa and luxury hotel, and was unusual in that one of its main marketing efforts was toward casino workers from Vegas. [citation needed]
Players Island also included several restaurants, [23] [27] convention space, [20] and a spa offering mud baths. [23] [22] A 45-unit RV park and tennis courts were scheduled to open in August 1995, [4] and a golf course was scheduled to open the following year. The $80 million resort was expected to employ as many as 900 people. [20]
