Aylmer is a town in Elgin County in southern Ontario, Canada, just north of Lake Erie, on Catfish Creek. It is 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of Highway 401 , and is almost equidistant between the United States cities of Detroit and Buffalo .

Elgin County (/ ˈ ɛ l ɡ ɪ n / EL-ghin) is a county composed of seven municipalities in Ontario, Canada with a 2021 population of 51,912. Its population centres are Aylmer, Port Stanley, Belmont, Dutton and West Lorne. The county seat is St. Thomas, which is separated from the county but within its geographic boundary.
The Port Bruce to Dorchester Road was assumed by the Department of Highways on August 25, 1937. [2] Initially only the portion of the route within Aylmer was paved. [5] However, by 1942 the highway had been paved north to the Springfield cutoff (now Ron McNeil Line). [6] Between 1949 and 1952, the section south of Aylmer to Port Bruce was paved.
The road is regionally maintained within Port Colborne as Niagara Regional Road 3, but regains its provincial designation at Highway 140. Its third and final terminus is at Edgewood Park, within the Fort Erie town limits. At the Ontario-Quebec border in L'Isle-aux-Allumettes Route 148 continues into Ontario as Highway 148. In Gatineau, Route 148 is concurrent with Autoroute 50 from Maloney Boulevard until the terminus of Autoroute 50 at des Allumettières Boulevard. Route 148 then continues west on des Allumettières Boulevard towards Aylmer.

Aylmer is a town in Elgin County in southern Ontario, Canada, just north of Lake Erie, on Catfish Creek. It is 20 kilometres (12 mi) south of Highway 401. Aylmer is surrounded by Malahide Township. In October 1817, John Van Patter, an emigrant from New York State, obtained 80 ha of land and became the first settler on the site of Aylmer.
