New Braunfels (/ ˈ b r ɔː n f ə l z / ⓘ BRAWN-fəlz) is a city in Comal and Guadalupe counties in the U.S. state of Texas.It is the seat of Comal County. The city covers 44.9 square miles (116 km 2) and had a population of 90,403 as of the 2020 Census. [7]
Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, a German prince who served as Commissioner-General of the Adelsverein, ordered the construction of the "Sophienburg" (transl. Sophie's castle) in 1845, named after his wife Princess Sophie. [2] [3] At that point, the Sophienburg was a log cabin constructed on a hilltop in what became New Braunfels. [3]
