This is a list of Canadian islands as ordered by area. It includes all 50 islands with an area greater than 1,000 km 2 (390 sq mi). The total area of these islands is 1,545,444 km 2 .
Canada is divided into 10 provinces and three territories.The majority of Canada's population is concentrated in the areas close to the Canada–US border.Its four largest provinces by area (Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta) are also its most populous; together they account for 86.5 percent of the country's population.
Of the more than 36,000 islands, only 11 are populated. Baffin Island, the largest, also has the largest population of 13,309. [2] The population accounts for 67.37 per cent of the 19,355 people in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, 56.51 per cent of the population of the Arctic Archipelago, and 35.38 per cent of the population of Nunavut. The islands listed have a specified year-round population of over 50 residents. Many islands are popular tourist destinations, and experience a sharp population increase during peak travel seasons. In 2017, the Great Lakes Island Coalition was founded, a group dedicated to representing the interests of Great Lakes island residents. [1]
The total population of the islands at the March 2022 census was 5,819, [2] of which 5,223 lived in Saint-Pierre and 596 in Miquelon-Langlade. [70] At the time of the 1999 census, 76% of the population was born on the archipelago, while 16.1% were born in metropolitan France, a sharp increase from the 10.2% in 1990.
