It has a large volume, so the cone doesn't have as much resistance to keep it from bottoming. On the other hand, this gives it the low bass extension that goes down to 16hz. I really do think that the trade off is worth it for home theater, where I don't plan on cranking it too loud, and can enjoy every deep note recorded on the disk.
Popping sound can be a symptom of the speaker surround which attaches the cone to the basket (metal frame of the speaker)being torn. The popping sound results when the speaker voice coil rubs against the tube in which the voice coil travels. Try listening at very low volume and see if you hear the popping.
If you had a CD with 1/3 octave test tones from 10Hz to 20000Hz, you could just "feel" the cone as you plays tones of frequencies 10, 12, 15, 17, 20, 22, 25, 28Hz at low volume levels. When you get to the frequency where the cone doesn't move much at all, that'll be the resonant frequency, give or take 2Hz.
I checked the speaker cone and it was intact. The crossover is set to 80Hz on the speaker and the volume control is set to about 60%. Changing the crossover frequency did nothing...changing the volume control, however did. Higher, it popped more. The Audyssey setup has already been run. I ran the Test Tones and it "popped" as well.
Joe, I liked your review. I, too, enjoyed Volume 1 and hope this year sees the release of Volume 2 (and maybe even a Volume 3). As a kid in the early 80s, these were usually mixed with the Famous era cartoons when shown on my local station during the week; and on the weekend CBS had its Saturday morning originals.
Take the driver, attach it to any amp and play something with some decent bass through it. Start at low volume and ramp it up.This will remove the amplifier in the sub from being the issue. If it plays well, then there is an electronics issue, if it buzzes and rattles, then it is the driver.
Hey, guys, I own a Sony STR-DE835 AV Receiver. Over the past few years, the volume knob has sometimes frozen and couldn't be moved with the remote control (new batteries). I've used compressed air around the prong the knob fits over to clean it, but it never fixed the problem.
See those 2 wires going from the terminals to the triple joint (the joint where the cone, spider and voice coil all meet)? Those are tinsel wires. Some drivers use a piece of felt on the cone so that during high excursion, the tinsel wire won't make a noise if it slaps the back side of the cone.

The X15+ subwoofer is M&K’s first with a 15″ driver, it actually has a pair of them. With a cone made from carbon fiber sandwiched over a foam inner layer, NBR rubber surround, double stack ceramic magnets and 12 spoke cast aluminum basket this thing is a beast. But is it all looks, can it walk the walk as well?
