These so-called customs are pretty ridiculously priced. The St. Croix didn’t wow me at all handling them in the store. Hard to believe that a 27″ ice rod can cost almost as much as a St. Croix Avid. I’ve bought those new for $150. No kidding. I agree with this 100 percent. The price is crazy.
Jakob and his friends have been fishing areas of the St. Croix River, and during our last two outings we have noticed an overabundance of Shad. Shad on the surface near open water, dead Shad on the bottom of the river (using a Marcum LX-9 and it’s camera feature), even Shad coming up through the holes in the ice we are fishing.
I have a 32″ medium action Avid ice series and is good for ripping raps and reaction type strikes. The rod is a little stiffer so if you fish lighter spoons or jigs might want to consider a medium light or something on that order. Never used the mojo ice though so I won’t be able to offer any advice between the two series of rods. Hope this ...

So I’m looking to upgrade to a better and longer ice rod. Anybody have reviews on the St Croix Premiere Ice Rod series? I just cannot bring myself to spend more than $30 (maybe $40) for a rod. While I understand Thorne Bros, TUCR and others make a great product. But I just can’t justify it. Especially for a panfish rod.
I’m trying to choose between two ice rods for walleye….a St Croix Avid Jigging Series rod or a Tuned Up Custom Rods Inferno. Which one would be better? I fish with 1/8-1/4 oz lures…so if I went with the St Croix what action should I get?
FYI, for anyone else doing this. The Pac Bay Minima guides are what st.croix uses on these rods, but the size 8 I ordered were too big. You will need to order a smaller size, as the rubber grommet was very loose in the size 8 guide.

Daiwa, Shimano, and even 13 Fishing have gapped St Croix in terms of bang for the buck at every price point. Won’t be buying another St. Croix unless they finally decide to push innovation instead of living in the past. All 5 of those rods are there cheap Mexico rods if I remember correctly. I personally think they all are less then desirable
Beaver Dam Noodle ice rod 32″ The K&E Whip’r rod is an ultralight and fishes like an ultralight. The Beaver Dam Noodle ice rod may have an ultralight tip but has a slight transition into more of a L power rod. 8-9″ crappies feels like big fish. I have used the St. Croix Premiere 36″ L power rod and it works great.
