On October 1, 1972, the building was declared to be a landmark by the California Historical Society; and in September 1999, it became known as the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi. It is a Pro-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco.
Originally the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Fresno announced the consecration of St. Charles Borromeo Church for Nov. 4, 2022, however the date had to be changed to sometime in early spring 2023.

[1] The diocese comprises Imperial and San Diego counties in Southern California and has more than 100 churches. The cathedral of the diocese is St. Joseph Cathedral in the Cortez Hill neighborhood of downtown San Diego.
