I learned about inline fiberglass windows from this website and went ahead and ordered 12 windows for a high-performance build in climate zone 6. (This site was an invaluable resource for sorting out all of the building science details). It was completed in summer 2019. There were 4 fixed windows, 6 casement, 1 inswing, and 1 tilt n turn door.
Regarding fiberglass vs. uPVC windows, Martin Holladay answered a similar question this way: First of all, the terms "uPVC window," "PVC window," and "vinyl window" are all interchangeable. When manufacturers brag that their windows are made of "uPVC," they are muddying the waters rather than clarifying the issue.
If you can't afford fiberglass windows, vinyl windows will serve you well. b4316207 | Aug 13, 2015 10:58am | #2 OK thank you for your response , question what would be considered good quality vinyl windows , i have been reading that intus gets good reviews , but I would avoid not waiting 8-12 weeks to get them and was wondering if there is a US ...
Does anyone have experience with Serious Windows or Canadian fiberglass windows? I'm having a difficult time finding high SHGC windows (with a U-value less than or equal to 0.30) for my passive solar home that are affordable. Looks like the fiberglass windows can give me the performance I'm looking for, but I can't find any local installations to inspect the quality of manufacture.
On the day of installation, triple pane vinyl windows will perform as well as anything. Over the course of 20 years, I wouldn't trust vinyl as much as a nicer fiberglass window (be aware that many manufacturers say "fiberglass" but it's a composite that doesn't perform the same). I think the money/energy savings in the long term favor fiberglass.
The windows are made with foam-filled fiberglass frames, suspended films inside the glass, inert gas fill, and high R-values, common attributes in this category of uber efficiency. Scott Heeschen selected Serious units for a south-facing clerestory and Marvin Integrity units for the rest of the house after getting quotes from…
These Fiberglass Windows trap water in the frame and even if there is a weephole it often clogs and backs up water into the frame which then corrodes the screws and works it’s way through the corner down into the wall. People are always happy with Fiberglass in the short term because they are energy efficient and look better than vinyl.
There are several materials used in high-performance windows. The more popular windows in the South are vinyl, fiberglass, composites, and wood-clad, but you still find wood and aluminum window frames too. Vinyl, fiberglass, and composite frames are valued for their energy efficiency and low-maintenance requirements. They are offered in a ...
The fiberglass ones I've installed had a groove on the face for a metal sill which makes it much simpler. If you can make the exterior sill extension work (even if it means moving the windows outboard a bit) with the siding+insulation depth you have, it will be a much easier and cleaner install.
Fiberglass windows are mechanically fastened together while UPVC is generally fusion welded on all corners . UPVC windows are widely accepted as the window of choice in Europe when trying to achieve energy efficiency and low maintenance and are quickly gaining traction in the US.
