This is a list of sovereign states and dependent territories in the geographical region of Oceania. Although it is mostly ocean and spans many tectonic plates, Oceania is occasionally listed as one of the continents. Most of this list follows the boundaries of geopolitical Oceania, which includes Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
It is a part of the Lists of country subdivision flags, which is split into continents due to its size. For purposes of this article, Oceania is taken to comprise Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia. The principal subdivisions are generally the ones that are identified as first-order subdivisions under the ISO 3166-2 coding scheme.
National flags are adopted by governments to strengthen national bonds and legitimate formal authority. Such flags may contain symbolic elements of their peoples, militaries, territories, rulers, and dynasties. The flag of Denmark is the oldest flag still in current use as it has been recognized as a national symbol since the 13th century.
