The bodies of the DE30AC and the DM30AC are extremely similar; the difference is the ability of the DM30AC to use electric third rail while the diesel engine is off, enabling the locomotive to use the East River Tunnels into New York Penn Station. This permits direct service from non-electrified lines in eastern Long Island via the western ...
The R56 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Middelburg with Pietermaritzburg via Molteno, Maclear and Kokstad. It is co-signed with the N2 between Kokstad and Stafford's Post for 39 kilometres. [1] The R56 is known for being part of the shortest route between Cape Town in the Western Cape and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
Diesel–electric transmission is used on railways by diesel–electric locomotives and diesel–electric multiple units, as electric motors are able to supply full torque from 0 RPM. Diesel–electric systems are also used in marine transport, including submarines, and on some other land vehicles.
The Coradia Polyvalent is the latest variant in the Coradia family. It can operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h (99 mph) in electric or bi-mode at voltages of 25 kV and 1.5 kV; a cross-border version capable of operating at a voltage of 15 kV, suitable for the German and Swiss rail networks, is also available. [1]
It joins a fleet of 62 diesel-electric work locomotives on the system. Third rail power is not used because the third rail is normally turned off at work sites for safety reasons. [ 3 ] Instead, the R156 is powered by a 6-cylinder, 800 horsepower Cummins QSK 23 diesel engine. [ 4 ]
In practice, the German locomotives had an axle load of 21 tonnes (20.7 long tons; 23.1 short tons) (which is normal for this type of diesel locomotive). General Electric supplied diesel engines and electrical transmission system (which used IGBT -based inverters driving AC traction motors).
