Agave americana, commonly known as the century plant, [5] maguey, or American aloe, [6] is a flowering plant species belonging to the family Asparagaceae. It is native to Mexico and the United States, specifically Texas.
Its tall yellow flower stalks dot dry rocky slopes and washes throughout the spring. It forms a rosette of fleshy gray-green leaves 20–70 cm long and 4.5–10 cm broad, with sharp spines along the edges and at the tips. It flowers at maturity (20 to 40 years [3]), sending up an inflorescence 2–6 m tall.
The leaves turn purple and red in color when flowering occurs. The rosettes of this plant are medium-sized, growing to be about 1m tall and 1.2m wide. The flower head of Agave gigantensis is much taller, about 4-5m in height. There is a stout flowering scape and the flower head contains small clusters of flowers, known as inflorescence.
