Seal Beach National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge encompassing 965 acres (3.91 km 2) located in the California coastal community of Seal Beach.Although it is located in Orange County, it is included as part of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

The Anaheim Bay entrance is located at the westernmost corner of Orange County near the Los Angeles County line. The bay and its associated harbors and wetlands extend southeast along the coast for a distance of some 7 miles (11 km) from Seal Beach towards Huntington Beach; they are protected by a long peninsular barrier beach where Surfside, Sunset Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach are situated.
The East Garden Grove Wintersburg Channel runs through the Reserve. Beginning in December 2007, flood control improvements were made by the County of Orange to reinforce the levees damaged in the rains of 2005 and protect the wetlands. [13] In addition, the Newport–Inglewood Fault goes through the reserve.
The San Mateo Creek drainage basin covers 139 square miles (360 km 2) mostly in San Diego County and partially in Orange County. [15] It shares boundaries with several watersheds – including Segunda Deshecha Cañada to the west, Arroyo San Onofre to the southeast, and streams draining into Lake Elsinore in the northeast.
The Aliso Creek drainage basin lies in the south central part of Orange County, roughly halfway between the Santa Ana River and the border of San Diego County. [ 21 ] [ 22 ] It is an elongated area of 34.9 square miles (90 km 2 ), ranging from about a mile (1.6 km) in width in the north to 5 miles (8.0 km) wide in the south.
The Wood Canyon subwatershed is contained entirely within the San Joaquin Hills, a small coastal mountain range that follows much of Orange County's Pacific coast.It is a long, narrow valley about 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1.2 miles (1.9 km) wide, bounded by arid slopes 700 to 1,000 feet (210 to 300 m) high, and covering about 4 square miles (10 km 2).
