The precise definition or classification as to what kind of movement the Solar Temple was by academics is inconsistent; scholars have labeled it variously as an esoteric new religious movement, a neo-Templar group, a Rosicrucian organization, a doomsday or suicide cult, a new magical movement, a magical-esoteric religion, or a secret society, among others. The Order detonated a timed firebomb in a movie theater in Seattle (causing no deaths or injuries), in order to occupy the police during their second planned armored car robbery that took place the next day. They also detonated a bomb at the only synagogue in Boise, Idaho. [18]
From 30 September to 5 October 1994, 53 members or former members of the Order of the Solar Temple died in a series of mass murders and suicides in Morin-Heights, Quebec, Canada, and in Cheiry and Salvan in Switzerland. The Solar Temple, or OTS, was founded in 1984, active in several Francophone countries.
The Order of the Solar Temple: The Temple of Death was published in 2006 by Ashgate. [5] According to the book's publisher, it is the first book-length work on the OTS in English, [6] and according to Hendrik Bogdan it was, as of 2011, still the only English-language academic book on the group. [7]
This was done in order to facilitate a spiritual voyage to the star Sirius, a "transit", as it had been in previous mass suicides. This was the second mass murder-suicide associated with the group, following the 1994 mass murder-suicide , which had killed 53 members of the group, including both of its leaders, Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret .
Joseph Léonce Di Mambro was born 19 August 1924 in Pont-Saint-Esprit, a town in the Gard department of France, the oldest of three siblings. [1] [2] His father, Raphaël Di Mambro, was an immigrant from Northern Italy, a glassworker.
