Government Engineering College, Barton Hill (GEC-BH) is a public engineering college situated in Barton Hill, Thiruvananthapuram, India. Founded in 1999 by the Government of Kerala, it provides engineering programmes under the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, accredited to the National Board of Accreditation.
The urban councils of Kerala date back to the 17th century, when the Dutch Malabar established the municipality of Fort Kochi.In 1664, the municipality of Fort Kochi was established by Dutch Malabar, making it the first municipality in the Indian subcontinent, which was dissolved when the Dutch authority got weaker in the 18th century. The Palace has 4 suites named after the royal family and the goddesses after whom the queens were named. The four uber luxurious suites are coloured red, rusty orange, blue and green with a view of The Arabian sea from each of the rooms. The renovated palace has Murano Chandeliers and Mantellassi furnishings and has state of the art automation.
Post war, the Travancore royal family starting using the hotel to welcome their guests. [2] Later on KTDC took over the hotel, and till now, the hotel stands as a heritage location for tourists. [3] It is the oldest star hotel of KTDC and is also considered the only heritage business hotel in Trivandrum. [4] [5]
In 1954, it was again brought to Thiruvananthapuram, leaving at Ernakulam, a sister college and was housed in the current premises in the Highland Bungalow on the Barton Hill. [5] Under the University Act of 1957, the college was transferred to the control of Government of Kerala. In 1961, the Government made the college a permanent institution.
