Ernst Heinrich Hoffmann (June 18, 1899–January 3, 1956) was an American conductor who served as the music director of the Houston Symphony for eleven years. Hoffmann was born in Boston, Massachusetts. His father was a violinist in the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
Kurtz was married three times. [2] He divorced his first wife, Katherine, to marry flutist Elaine Shaffer; Shaffer had been the first-chair flute of the Houston Symphony (under Kurtz) until she resigned in 1953 to pursue a successful solo career. [6] The two remained married until her death, of lung cancer at the age of 47, in 1973. [7]

Georgianne Lundy (born October 18, 1954) is an American conductor and music educator. [1] [2] She founded the Scott Joplin Chamber Orchestra and the William Grant Still String Quartet, both specializing in performing chamber music written by black composers, and she was the first African-American woman to conduct the Houston Symphony.
