The Army had planned to build prototypes by 2014 and to begin to field the first combat-ready M1A3s by 2017, but this never came to pass. Instead, the U.S. Army produced incremental improvements to the M1A2 in the system enhancement packages, culminating in the M1A2 SEPv3. The SEPv4 had begun testing when the program was cancelled.
