The building opened in 2016 for temporary use by Garner Magnet High School students, as Garner Magnet's campus was undergoing renovations. [3] The building began operations as South Garner High in 2018. [4] It initially opened to first and second-year students (freshmen and sophomores). [2] The school building has three stories. [4]
Garner High School had served white students (and handful of African-American students) who elected to attend under the "choice" plan that was in place prior to desegregation. Garner resident Tim Stevens, a retired journalist, in March 2018 premiered a theatrical production, "68," telling the story of the school's September 2 opening that year.
Another classroom wing was built in 1999. Some aspects of the Career and Technical Center program were also included in the South High School. The building, which had also been a junior high school and then an intermediate high school, was demolished to make room for the new state-of-the-art 520,000 square feet (48,000 m 2) main campus facility.

Needham B. Broughton High School was established in 1929 as Raleigh High School. It is the oldest high school in Raleigh still being used. [5] Shortly after it was built, C. B. Edwards sent a letter to the Raleigh Public School Board, requesting that the school—then without an official name—be named for Needham B. Broughton in honor of his service to public education in the city.
