The Monroe Expressway, designated U.S. Route 74 Bypass (US 74 Byp. ), is a 18.68-mile (30.06 km) controlled-access toll road in Union County in the U.S. state of North Carolina , the first to be completed in the Charlotte area.
North Carolina Highway 25 (NC 25) was an original state highway that traversed from NC 20, in Monroe, southwest to SC 26, immediately across the state line. North Carolina Highway 605 (NC 605) was established in 1932 as a new primary route between US 1/US 15/NC 50/NC 75, in Tramway, and US 421/NC 60, in Jonesboro. In 1936, NC 24 was extended northwest from Fayetteville to Tramway, replacing NC 605.
In 1961 or 1962, US 29 was moved back further to NC 273 going onto I-85, but, surprisingly, in 1963, US 29 was placed back on its original route through Charlotte again. Similar action also in Salisbury , where, in 1960, US 29 was moved onto I-85, then, in 1964 or 1965, it was moved back through town.
About 1958, NC 200 was rerouted in Monroe to follow Morrow Road and Haynes Street onto new bypass US 74/US 601, then return on Morgan Mill Road. By 1982, it had reverted to follow along Charlotte Avenue and Church Street.
