America is part of the municipality of Horst aan de Maas in Limburg, and lies approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) northwest of Venlo, 23 km (14 mi) east of Helmond, and 16 km (9.9 mi) west of the German border. The town is located within the agricultural Peel region of the Netherlands where peat extraction has been practiced since the Middle Ages.
